Board Profile: Juan David Mejia

AFCM is managed by volunteers who, in addition to being passionately dedicated to chamber music, have outstanding qualifications. We invite you to get to know them.

Q: You’re new! What attracted you to the AFCM Board?
JDM: I am a chamber music lover, and I wanted to learn how organizations such as AFCM function.

zQ: What will your role on the Board be?
JDM: Not decided yet.

Q: What role does music plays in your life?
JDM: Music is my profession. I am a cellist—I have been playing cello for 24 years.

Q: How did you first become interested in the chamber music form?
JDM: I went to San Francisco Conservatory of Music (SFCM). At SFCM they have the oldest chamber music program in the country. I got to play wonderful repertoire and be coached by extraordinary chamber musicians, including Mark Sokol, Bonnie Hamptom and Manehem Pressler.

Q: What other kinds of music do you enjoy?
JDM: All music. I am very open to any genre as long as I think the musicians are good and the music is well made.

Q: What other performing arts or charitable organizations are you involved with in Tucson?
JDM: I was the Coordinator for the String Project at the U of A.

Q: Your interests outside of chamber music?
JDM: I love to travel. Over the summer I traveled to Colombia and San Francisco. I collect records and have a wonderful chamber and orchestral collection. When I have time I like watching European football.

Q: What is the best part of an AFCM concert?
JDM: The performers and the great turnout by the community.

Q: Your favorite piece of chamber music?
JDM: Beethoven’s String Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 127

Q: Your favorite book?
JDM: Gabriel García Márquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude

Q: Favorite poets?
JDM: Federico García Lorca and Pablo Neruda
